“Saskatoons are a berry that resembles blue berries in the taste and appearance, only it grows on tall bushes on the prairies among other trees, usually poplar and oak. My mother used to preserve them or dry them or make jam of them. About a year ago, I visited 189 Ridley and in conversation with Theo I discovered she liked making jam, getting up even at 6 in the morning to get on with it. When I decided to do a painting to be hung at St. Vladimir’s in memory of her passing away, that is what stuck in my mind – the Ukrainian pioneer settler making jam in a home stead on the prairies.”
