Celebrating Ukrainian Flag Day with Yurko Gutsulyak's Blue-Yellow Series

Today, on National Flag Day, we are excited to feature the Blue-Yellow Series by the renowned Toronto-based designer Yurko Gutsulyak. This day holds special significance as it honours the blue and yellow flag, a powerful symbol of Ukraine’s resilience and unity.

The Blue-Yellow Series

The Blue-Yellow Series is a collection of six silkscreen-printed posters, each measuring 23.6 x 16.5 inches (60 x 42 cm), that creatively reinterprets the colours of the Ukrainian flag. These works, designed by Yurko Gutsulyak and his team at Gutsulyak.Studio, delves into the deeper meanings behind Ukraine’s national symbols, especially in the context of the ongoing challenges the nation faces.

Since the beginning of the war, the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag have come to symbolize resilience, unity, and hope for Ukrainians worldwide. The Blue-Yellow Series explores these themes through innovative representations, including the wavelengths of light, chemical compositions of pigments, and imagery such as wildflowers and sign language gestures.

The central message of this series, "When no colours are left, the Ukrainian flag is still waving," serves as a powerful reminder of the unwavering strength of the Ukrainian spirit. We are proud to have acquired these six posters as part of the SVI art collection, where they will continue to inspire and resonate with our community and will be on display for Ukrainian Heritage Day in Ontario this September.
